It’s still the height of summer, but there is already a buzz around Madison for this fall’s football season. The University of Wisconsin – Madison has a rich heritage with its football program and the fans are already gearing up for another exciting season! Camp Randall Stadium is beginning its preparations for the onslaught of students, alumni, family and friends to watch their favorite Badgers take the field once again. Sleep Inn & Suites is so excited for all the upcoming events at Camp Randall Stadium this fall that will continue to follow in the history of the thrill of victories with the possibility of some agony of a defeat.
Camp Randall Stadium has quite a history. “Camp Randall”, as it was first called, was a Union Army training camp dating back to the Civil War. It was named for then Governor Alexander Randall, who later became Post Master General for the United States. The land was sold by the State of Wisconsin to the University in 1893 and was used primarily as an athletic venue for track and field events. Football and Baseball events were introduced in 1895. Construction of the stadium began in the early 1900’s and after much difficulty the steel and concrete structure eventually opened in 1916. It has undergone a series of renovations and expansions through the years to bring it to the magnificent structure you see today. The field was originally grass, but in 1968 it became one of the first stadiums in the United States to convert to artificial turf.

The University of Wisconsin – Madison is proud of their football team and the fans are too. It is a time honored tradition while visiting Madison to attend a game Camp Randall Stadium to experience all the energy and fun this amazing town has to offer.

Essential Things To Know About Camp Randall Stadium

  • The Wave
    • There is a strict pattern to the wave. The student section begins the wave and sends it counter clockwise around the stadium once. It is repeated in slow motion and then again at double the original speed. Now, it gets reversed and then split into two counter rotational waves. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it!
  • The Fifth Quarter
    • After a harrowing season in 1969 and losing 24 straight games, the Marching Band created an event for the fans called The Fifth Quarter that began when the game ended. It is a compilation of songs sung by the fans and guided by the talented Marching Band. Songs like “Beer Barrel Polka” and the infamous “Chicken Dance” are just a few and most everyone in the stadium remains for this. Everyone from the band to the cheerleaders and all the fans in the stands participate and it is quite a sight to see. At the end, the band plays Varsity as they leave the field. So even in the very very rare instance the game is not so good, you can always look forward The Fifth Quarter!
